Preparing for Your Vacation Photoshoot
Our #1 Tips to have an amazing shoot!
So you booked a photoshoot for your next trip. Awesome! Since it can take a few hours to receive photographer date availability, we’d like to take the chance to share our tips and tricks that we’ve seen works best for shoots.
Pop with Color
Sometimes making sure you have an amazing photo selection is as simple as adding a dash of color to really make you pop in the photo. If you’d like to wear neutrals like white, try giving yourself some options by adding a pinch of color to your casual outfits with a bright scarf, jacket, or a statement jewelry piece. And make sure that applies to everyone in the shoot! We love when partners and families complement each other’s clothing. Pick a few key tones to build a wardrobe around. An easy way to start is to pick one one central piece like a patterned dress. Then, simply pick colors from that dress for everyone else to wear.
Time of Day, Go for Gold
The best time of day to guarantee gorgeous, delicate light is what we call the “golden hour.” This time is within 1-2 hours after the sun has risen in the morning or 1-2 hours before it sets in the evening. Avoid scheduling mid-day shoots as the sun can create harsh shadows and squinted eyes. You can select time times of day you would like on the booking form, then your photographer will help pick on the best time to shoot within your preferred time of day.
This is the most important one. We want to capture YOU! Wear something that you feel comfortable and confident in. Sometimes that is a dress and sandals, for others that is jeans and a t-shirt. Be true to your personal style so that your best self can shine through in the photos. When on your photoshoot with a partner or family, think about something that can set the mood and evoke an atmosphere. Whether it is your wedding day, your engagement, an inside joke you have, or your family holidays, thinking back to those times together will help you set the mood for a fun, happy, and beautiful photoshoot.
Walk, Spin, Laugh, Move!
What feelings do you want your shoot to evoke? Sweet, adventurous, romantic or candid? Thinking about this ahead of time helps your photographer plan all the details of your shoot and ensures that your photographer can capture the photos of your dreams. When on your photoshoot, make natural movements such as walking arm in arm, going for a spin, dancing in the street, a big hug and a laugh, and anything else that pops in your head! Moving around in your photos makes the shot more natural and interesting. Think about it – would you rather be in mid-motion laughing or stiff looking at the camera? Start to envision these photos so that when you are on your shoot you are ready to have fun and have a good time instead of stressing about the pose.
Give Yourself Plenty of Time
Give yourself ample time to get to the meeting point for the shoot. If you are rushed to get to the shoot and rushed to leave, that feeling will come through in the photos. Take an hour before the shoot and get a nice snack or cocktail to loosen up a little (it works!) near the meeting point so that when you are in front of the camera you can take it easy, have fun, and enjoy capturing your travel story with the ones you love.
