Santorini Photoshoot: Best Photo Spots & What to Wear in Greece
Home to gorgeous whitewashed, cubiform houses, it is such a romantic destination that’s perfect for a Santorini photoshoot. Whether you’re planning pre-wedding portraits, a casual couple session, or even THE Santorini flying dress photoshoot, the city offers stunning backdrops and unforgettable views. Below we’ll cover the best photo spots on the island, tips for what to wear, & how to hire the best photographer for your photo session.
Best Santorini Photoshoot Spots
- Oia Village: This is our most popular Santorini photoshoot spot! This is where you get the most iconic Instagram photos of the island. Photos turn out best in the early morning since it gets very crowded in the afternoons.
- Fira: This is the main hub of Santorini and known for its Cycladic architecture.
- Imerovigli: This is a romantic spot with classic white houses, blue roofs, and views of the sea.
- Pyrgos Village: It is one of the highest points on the island and has far fewer crowds in a very peaceful setting.
What to Wear in Santorini
While it can be extremely exciting to plan, it can be overwhelming when deciding what to wear for the photoshoot! Luckily, we’ve put together some helpful tips on what to bring in your suitcase so you’ll not only feel amazing – you’ll look fantastic too! We also have a few places to rent your dress from with great prices.
Break out the blues
Blue looks extraordinary against the whitewashed walls of Santorini. Not to mention the blue Santorini church domes and doors as well as the breathtaking Aegean Sea. Royal blues will look best in this environment, but any hue of blue will make for a picture-perfect scene!
Add a pop of color
If you decide to have a photoshoot in Santorini during dawn or dusk – or what we in the photography business like to call the golden hour – it may be fun to add a pop of orange, pink, or yellow. These colors will help bring out the golden colors in the sky with the bright blue Aegean Sea in the background! Make sure to ask your Santorini photographer about how to avoid crowds and get the best lighting.
Don’t be afraid of white
Of course, you don’t want to blend in with the signature white walls that surround Santorini – however, if you’re doing a couples photoshoot, it can make for great photos if one person wears white. Many ladies opt for white dresses (whether it’s a wedding shoot or not) and, when paired with their partner’s pop of color, it makes for some incredible photos! Wearing white also allows the surrounding blues of the sea and other accents to shine through.
Consider a Flying Dress Photoshoot
Book a flying dress photoshoot with a professional photographer to get amazing vacation photos with whitewashed buildings, spectacular cliff views, and breathtaking sunsets.
There are multiple businesses on the island with affordable prices for these flying dresses. They are usually around the $200 USD price range. They offer many colors such as blue, yellow, or red which all go perfectly with Santorini’s iconic backdrops.
When is the best time for a Santorini Photoshoot?
Equally important to the location of your shoot is to make sure your shoot is as the perfect time! Without a doubt, the best time to take photos is in the early morning or early evening.
Check out our golden hour calculator to see the best times for a Santorini photoshoot. We are partial to the early mornings between 7:30 am and 8:30 am because the whole group starts fresh and there is less chance of other people or tourists around to interrupt your beautiful photo backdrop. Although it may be a little hard to wake up the kids, it is totally worth it.
When is the best weather in Santorini, Greece
In terms of weather, it’s never a bad time to go to Santorini. In fact, in December temperatures only go as low as 50F. July and August see the warmest temperatures, with highs around 85F. The months of May through September see the least amount of rain and may be the best time to plan your Santorini photoshoot. If you’re going in the off-season, be sure to bring a few layers to play around with and you’ll be fine!
What time is sunset in Santorini, Greece
We love taking photos during ‘Golden Hour’, the first or last hour of sunlight which helps produce a softer and warmer light due to the indirect sunlight that is evenly diffused. We highly suggest avoiding anytime between noon and 2 pm, since they tend to be the busiest and brightest times of the day. Check out our Golden Hour Calculator here.
