Best Rooftop Proposal in New York City: THE EDGE

THE EDGE is the highest open-air sky deck in the Western Hemisphere and gives visitors an unobstructed view of Manhattan from the Hudson Yards. Local Lens proposal photographer starts at $275, and tickets to The Edge start at $36 per adult. Read on for the step-by-step on how to make it happen, what it costs, and when to go for the best photos.

Best Spots to Propose at The Edge

The Edge isn’t just one big open platform — there are a few distinct areas, and where you position yourself matters for both the proposal and the photos.

The Glass Floor Extension

This is the signature spot — the triangular glass floor that juts out over Hudson Yards. The city is literally beneath your feet. For proposals, it reads beautifully in photos: the gridded streets below, the skyline behind you, and nothing between you and the sky. It’s the most photographed area of the deck. Arrive early in the morning or on a weekday to have it relatively to yourself.

The West-Facing Corner

If you’re proposing around sunset, position yourselves facing west toward the Hudson River. The light hits the deck at a low angle and wraps around your partner’s face — it’s the kind of light photographers chase. Your Local Lens photographer will know to position you here, but it helps to know this in advance so you can guide the moment naturally.

The Bar Area (Peak Bar)

The outdoor bar area is slightly more sheltered and often less crowded than the glass floor extension. If your partner doesn’t love heights or you want a quieter corner, this is a good alternative. It still has full Manhattan views and works well for a post-proposal toast — which, yes, you should absolutely have ready.

Best Time to Propose at The Edge

Golden hour is the move. Check the sunset time for your visit date — Google it here — and plan to arrive 45 to 60 minutes before. The light is soft and warm right before and right after sunset, which is when your photos will look their best. Midday light is harsh and unflattering on the glass deck; avoid it if you can.

  • Weekdays: Significantly less crowded than weekends, especially mornings
  • Weekends: Peak crowds mid-morning through late afternoon — plan for golden hour to thin things out
  • Weather: Check the forecast. Rain makes the glass deck genuinely slippery and kills visibility. Clear days give you 80-mile views; hazy days flatten the skyline
  • Winter: Cold but stunning — fewer tourists, crisp visibility, and a dramatic city backdrop

Buy tickets in advance. Walk-up availability is not guaranteed, especially on weekends and holidays. Book at edgenyc.com. NYC residents get a discounted rate — worth checking before you pay full price.

How to Propose at The Edge NYC: Step by Step

Here’s the practical breakdown — what to do, in what order, so you’re not improvising on the day.

  1. Buy tickets in advance. Book your tickets at edgenyc.com before you do anything else. General admission starts at $36 per adult. If you’re doing a private after-hours proposal, contact The Edge directly (at least 3 weeks out) before booking anything else — private access changes the logistics entirely.
  2. Book your Local Lens photographer. Your photographer needs to buy their own ticket to the deck — factor this into the plan. When you book, share your ticket date, arrival time, and proposal plan in detail. Your photographer will scout their position in advance (usually slightly off to the side at an angle, out of your partner’s eyeline) so the moment looks completely natural on camera.
  3. Pick your spot before the day arrives. Decide in advance: glass floor extension, west-facing railing, or the bar area? Tell your photographer which spot. The less you have to figure out in the moment, the better — adrenaline will do enough of the thinking for you.
  4. Set a meeting point with your photographer. You and your photographer will arrive at the deck separately. Pick a landmark — a specific spot on the deck near your chosen location — so you can find each other without making it obvious. A quick confirmation text once you’re both through security works well.
  5. Get oriented before you bring your partner to the spot. If you can, do a lap of the deck first. Know where you’re going so you don’t hesitate when it matters. Your partner is likely watching your energy — calm, confident, and purposeful reads well.
  6. Position your partner facing outward (skyline behind them). This is the key framing tip. You want the skyline in the background, not at your backs. If you’re at the glass floor extension, face northwest toward Midtown. If you’re at the west railing near sunset, face west. Your photographer will confirm this when you brief them, but it helps to know the logic.
  7. Propose — and let the photographer do their job. The moment your partner sees the ring, don’t rush back up. Stay low for a few extra seconds. Some of the best proposal photos happen in those three seconds between the question and the answer. Your photographer knows this — trust them to capture it.
  8. Do a post-engagement shoot immediately after. Most Local Lens packages include time for a full engagement shoot after the proposal. This is when your partner can fully take it in — ring shots, skyline portraits, and candid moments. Plan for at least 30 additional minutes on the deck.

How to Hire an NYC Proposal Photographer

The moment you reach for the ring, adrenaline and emotions start to kick in, and you might not even remember the moment! Hiring a secret NYC proposal photographer for your surprise engagement will allow you to capture and relive that moment again and again.

Your marriage proposal is a story you will never tire of telling, so it definitely deserves better than selfies! Capture it with New York City proposal photography that you’ll look back on for years to come.

How does a proposal photoshoot work?

Before choosing a photographer, we recommend having some NYC proposal ideas in mind first! There are two ways a proposal photoshoot usually happens:

  1. Hire the photographer for a “normal” photoshoot with your partner, but let the photographer in on your secret proposal plan! This is the best way to ensure the photographer captures the moment perfectly, usually at a closer distance and better positioned.
  2. The photographer can be waiting at the designated spot to secretly capture the moment, paparazzi-style. You will want to make sure that you are positioned in a way that the photographer captures your partner’s face and their reaction. After the big moment, the photographer will introduce themselves, and you can enjoy an engagement shoot afterwards to capture that post-engagement glow.

After your photo shoot is booked, you will be able to plan and coordinate with your photographer directly.

What’s included in an NYC proposal package?

With every engagement photography package, you’ll get high-resolution engagement photos that are professionally edited and delivered by email in a private online gallery within 5 business days. In your gallery, you will be able to see all the photos from your proposal shoot and get to download a certain number of your favorites, depending on your package.

With each NYC proposal package you’ll receive:

  • one-on-one planning with your photographer
  • photos of the big moment and post-engagement
  • private online gallery
  • high-resolution photos that are professionally edited
  • photos delivered within 5 days

Other NYC Rooftop Proposal Spots to Consider

The Edge is a great choice — but it’s not the only rooftop worth considering. If your partner doesn’t love extreme heights, or you want something with a bit more history to it, here are two solid alternatives.

Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center

Top of the Rock gives you one of the most iconic proposals in the city — looking south directly at the Empire State Building, with Midtown spread out below you. The deck is enclosed, which makes it more weather-friendly and a little less vertigo-inducing than The Edge. It’s also one of the most searched proposal locations in NYC.

The Ice Rink at Rockefeller Center (Winter Only)

If you’re planning a winter proposal, the Rockefeller Center ice rink is one of the most cinematic spots in New York. The Christmas tree, the golden Prometheus statue, and the rink itself make for an entirely different kind of proposal photo.

Again — the Rockefeller guide covers both options in full.

Central Park

For couples who’d rather skip the heights entirely, Central Park has spots that photograph just as beautifully — Bethesda Terrace, the Bow Bridge, and the Mall are all popular proposal locations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to propose at The Edge NYC?

Tickets to The Edge start at $36 per adult (NYC residents pay less — check for the discount at checkout). A Local Lens proposal photographer starts at $275 for 60 minutes and 30 edited photos. For a private after-hours proposal, contact The Edge directly — pricing varies based on your request.

Do I need to tell The Edge staff that I’m proposing?

You don’t have to for a standard visit — you can propose without notifying anyone. If you want a private experience (exclusive deck access after hours), you’ll need to coordinate with The Edge at least three weeks in advance via their events team. For a secret photographer setup, you coordinate separately with your Local Lens photographer.

Can my photographer get into The Edge?

Yes — your photographer will purchase their own ticket. Factor this into your planning when you share logistics. Coordinate a meeting spot on the deck in advance so you’re not texting each other in a crowd when you’re supposed to look like you’re just taking a stroll.

What time of day is best for proposal photos at The Edge?

Golden hour — 30 to 60 minutes before sunset. The light is warm and directional, which photographs beautifully on the glass deck. Midday is harsh. Early morning (open from 8am) is a solid backup if you want fewer people and don’t mind the softer light.

What happens after the proposal at The Edge?

Most couples spend 20–30 minutes celebrating on the deck, then head somewhere in Hudson Yards for dinner or drinks — the area has several good restaurants close by. Your Local Lens photographer will typically stay for a post-engagement shoot for the remainder of your booked time.

Can I bring champagne to The Edge?

Outside alcohol isn’t permitted — but Peak Bar on the deck serves cocktails and champagne. You can absolutely order a bottle to celebrate right there. If you’re doing a private proposal package through The Edge, ask what’s available to arrange in advance.
