Chapel Bridge, Lucerne: A Visitor’s Guide

Built in 1332, the Kapellbrücke is Europe’s oldest surviving covered wooden bridge, and Switzerland’s most photographed landmark. Here’s how to visit and photograph it.

What to shoot

The classic view is from the riverbank, framing the bridge’s dark wood and flower boxes against the water, with the octagonal Wasserturm water tower — which actually predates the bridge itself — anchoring one end.

Walk inside the covered bridge to see the surviving triangular panel paintings depicting Swiss and Lucerne history, tucked into the roof framework. From the far bank, look back for the classic postcard composition with the Old Town rooftops behind.

Time it right

Come in the morning for the softest light and the fewest people — the bridge is a major thoroughfare and fills with foot traffic through the day. Sunset gives a warmer, more atmospheric version of the same view, with the water catching color.

💡 Local tip: The bridge was almost entirely destroyed by a 1993 fire and rebuilt to match the original — a detail worth knowing, since much of what you’re photographing is faithful reconstruction rather than untouched medieval fabric.

FAQ

Is the Chapel Bridge the original 14th-century structure? Largely rebuilt — a 1993 fire destroyed most of the bridge, and it was reconstructed to match the original 1332 design, including replacing many of the historic gable paintings.

When’s the best time to photograph the Chapel Bridge? Morning, for soft light and the smallest crowds — it’s a busy pedestrian route through the day. Sunset gives a warmer, more atmospheric alternative.
