1. Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke)
Best light: morning ·
Terrain: flat, pedestrian Europe’s oldest covered wooden bridge (1332), its octagonal water tower predating it. Rebuilt after a 1993 fire, it still carries 17th-century paintings inside its gables (see Post 3).
2. Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal)
Best light: soft daylight ·
Terrain: small park, reflecting pond. A wounded lion carved into a rock face — Mark Twain called it “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.” The pond in front adds a reflection.
3. Musegg Wall
Best light: golden hour · Terrain: wall walk, steps. The best-preserved medieval fortification in Switzerland — nine towers, several free to climb, with rooftop views over the Old Town.
4. Old Town squares
Best light: morning · Terrain: flat, cobbled Hirschenplatz, Weinmarkt, and Kramgasse — tall, narrow buildings with painted facades depicting knights, jesters, and farm animals.
5. Lake Lucerne pier
Best light: sunset ·
Terrain: flat lakeside promenade. Lucerne’s pier is often called the city’s best photo spot — lake, city, and the surrounding Alps in one view.
6. Mount Pilatus
Best light: midday–afternoon ·
Terrain: cogwheel train (world’s steepest). A dramatic Alpine panorama a short ride from the city center — Rigi and Titlis are nearby alternatives.
