The spots

1. Cathedral Rock & Red Rock Crossing

Best light: late afternoon · Terrain: flat trail; day-use gate The icon. For the classic reflection, head to Red Rock Crossing at Crescent Moon Ranch, where Cathedral Rock mirrors in Oak Creek — best as the walls warm up late in the day.

2. Airport Mesa

Best light: sunrise or sunset · Terrain: small paid lot; short climb A 360° red-rock panorama from an elevated mesa. The overlook lot fills fast — arrive early, or use a Red Rock Pass for the trailhead.

3. Chapel of the Holy Cross

Best light: daytime · Terrain: paved ramp; gated 9–5 A striking modernist church built into the rock, with long views toward Bell Rock. Note the gate hours (9am–5pm) — no sunrise or sunset access.

4. Bell Rock

Best light: golden hour · Terrain: open, easy access A distinctive bell-shaped formation with clean, uncrowded angles — a reliable plan B when Cathedral Rock parking is full.

5. Oak Creek Canyon

Best light: autumn · Terrain: creek + canyon road Red rock meets fall colour along the creek — October is the window.

6. Red Rock Scenic Byway (SR 179)

Best light: golden hour · Terrain: roadside pullouts A string of drive-up vistas of Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, and Cathedral Rock.

💡 Local tip: Midday sun flattens the red out of the rock. Shoot within the golden hour — the last hour before sunset and first after sunrise — when the walls actually glow. And remember Red Rock Crossing and the Chapel both gate at set hours.
