Nine Arch Bridge Photo Guide, Ella

A stone railway viaduct curving through jungle and tea country — with a colourful train crossing it — is the signature shot of Sri Lanka’s hill country. Here’s how to get it.

The essentials

Best lightEarly morning mist or late-afternoon gold
Best angleAsanka Cafe viewpoint (above), or below the arches
Watch forLive trains, slippery paths, leeches after rain

Where to stand

Two very different frames: from the Asanka Cafe viewpoint above, you get the whole curved span in the tea-country landscape; from below the arches, you look up through the stonework with the sky (and a passing train) framed. Move between both if you have time.

Time it with a train

The bridge is good anytime, but a train crossing makes the shot. Check the day’s schedule locally at Ella station — times shift — and be in position early, as the viewpoint gets crowded.

💡 Safety first: This is an active railway with no barriers. When you hear a horn or see a train, step well clear of the tracks immediately. After rain the jungle path is slick and leeches are common — proper shoes help.

Make it a story

The scale of the bridge makes couples look small and cinematic against the jungle — a memorable proposal backdrop. See our proposal photography page.

FAQ

When do trains cross the Nine Arch Bridge? Several times a day, but times change — check locally at Ella station. Late-afternoon crossings pair a train with golden light.

Is it safe to photograph on the bridge? Only with care — it’s a live railway with no safety barriers. Stay off the tracks whenever a train is near, and watch for slippery paths after rain.
