The spots

1. Blue Ridge Parkway

Best light: sunrise/sunset ·

Terrain: drive-up overlooks “America’s Favorite Drive,” lined with overlooks — spectacular in October foliage.

Check current section closures first (see Post 3): some stretches are still reopening after Hurricane Helene.

2. Biltmore Estate

Best light: golden hour ·

Terrain: grounds + gardens (ticketed). America’s largest private home, with formal gardens and mountain views. Ticketed, and professional photography has its own rules — confirm ahead.

3. Craggy Gardens & Craggy Pinnacle

Best light: sunset ·

Terrain: short trail; a 360° ridgeline panorama (rhododendron blooms in June), best when the parkway section is open.

4. Downtown Asheville

Best light: golden hour ·

Terrain: flat, walkable Art Deco facades, the Grove Arcade, and murals — a lively, historic core.

5. River Arts District

Best light: daytime ·

Terrain: flat, rebuilding Working studios and murals along the French Broad.

The district is rebuilding after Helene — visiting directly supports its recovery.

6. Looking Glass Falls

Best light: midday (shade) ·

Terrain: roadside overlook. A 60-foot waterfall you can shoot right from the pull-off in nearby Pisgah.

💡 Local tip: Fall is peak everything — for foliage without the parkway gridlock, shoot at sunrise. Combining a Southern trip? See our Charleston and Savannah guides too.
