1. Red Square & St. Basil’s Cathedral
Best light: sunrise or late night ·
Terrain: vast open square. The heart of Moscow — St. Basil’s swirling domes, the Kremlin wall, and GUM. It’s busiest on weekends and can close for events, so aim for a weekday, at sunrise or late night, for empty frames (see Post 3).
2. Moscow Metro
Best light: off-peak ·
Terrain: underground stations. Often called the world’s most beautiful metro — chandeliers, mosaics, and marble. Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya, and Novoslobodskaya are standouts. Photography is allowed; shoot off-peak for empty platforms.
3. Zaryadye Park
Best light: golden hour ·
Terrain: modern park + cantilevered bridge. The floating “V-bridge” cantilevers over the Moskva River, framing St. Basil’s and the Kremlin — a modern counterpoint right beside Red Square.
4. Sparrow Hills (Vorobyovy Gory)
Best light: sunset ·
Terrain: elevated viewpoint. An 80-meter bluff with a panorama over the city, the river, Luzhniki Stadium, and the spire of Moscow State University behind you.
5. Cathedral of Christ the Savior
Best light: golden hour ·
Terrain: riverside. Gleaming gold domes by the river, with a footbridge nearby for elevated angles.
6. GUM
Best light: evening ·
Terrain: indoor arcade. The ornate 19th-century department store on Red Square — glass-roofed, and beautifully lit in the evening.
