A skyline of domes and minarets, a strait dividing two continents, and rainbow lanes in the old quarters — Istanbul is one of the world’s great photo cities. Here’s where to shoot, and when.

1. Galata Bridge & the Golden Horn
Best light: golden hour → blue hour · Terrain: flat bridge The classic Istanbul skyline — Süleymaniye and the New Mosque silhouetted over the water, with fishermen lining the bridge. A telephoto compresses the minarets beautifully.
2. Balat
Best light: late morning · Terrain: steep, cobbled; residential Istanbul’s most colourful quarter — stacked pastel houses, rainbow steps, and murals. People live here — shoot respectfully.
3. Süleymaniye Mosque
Best light: golden hour · Terrain: hilltop courtyard Grander and far quieter than Sultanahmet, with sweeping Golden Horn views from its terrace.
4. Galata Tower (from the streets)
Best light: golden hour · Terrain: narrow lanes Skip the queue and entry fee — shoot the tower rising over the rooftops from Büyük Hendek Street or the Galata Bridge, or a nearby rooftop bar at sunset.
5. Ortaköy Mosque
Best light: sunrise / sunset · Terrain: flat waterfront A petite Baroque mosque on the Bosphorus with the 15 July Martyrs Bridge behind — a postcard composition.
6. Sultanahmet rooftops*
Best light: sunrise · Terrain: rooftop terraces Rooftop restaurants frame Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Note: both are under renovation right now — see Post 3 before planning around them.
💡 Local tip: Go early. Galata Tower and the rooftops are mobbed by sunset, but at sunrise Sultanahmet Park and the bridges are calm — and the low light on the domes is better anyway.
