Waimea Canyon Photo Guide, Kauai

Ten miles long and 3,000 feet deep, Waimea Canyon is the easiest big-landscape win on Kauai — most of it shot straight from the road. Here’s how to do it right.

The essentials

WhereWest side, ~45 min up Hwy 550 from Waimea town
CostLookouts free · parking paid (covers Kōkeʻe too)
Best lightLate morning — sun reaches into the canyon
Watch forClouds fill the valleys by midday/afternoon

The lookouts, in order

Waimea Canyon Lookout

The main overlook and the classic frame — red-and-green ridgelines falling away into the gorge.

Puʻu Hinahina Lookout

A little farther up, a different angle down the canyon toward the coast.

Kalalau & Puʻu o Kila Lookouts (top of the road)

Keep driving to Kōkeʻe for the Na Pali Coast from above — arguably the best land view of the cliffs on the island.

💡 Local tip: Timing is everything here. Late morning light reaches down into the canyon, and — crucially — the Na Pali lookouts at the top cloud over by early afternoon. Do the canyon first, then race the clouds to Kalalau.

Make a morning of it

The drive from bottom to top takes time and the road is winding, so budget a half-day. Pair the canyon with the top-of-road Na Pali lookouts in one clean loop.
