Dress the part first
The dress code is strictly enforced. Women must cover hair, arms, and ankles — an abaya and scarf can be hired (~3 OMR) at the entrance if needed. Men need long trousers and sleeves. Dressing correctly isn’t just access; it’s respect for an active place of worship.
Where to shoot
The building is built on symmetry — centre yourself in the arcades and courtyards and let the repeating arches lead the eye. The main prayer hall holds a vast hand-woven Persian carpet and a huge chandelier (photography allowed in most areas; no flash). The exterior courtyards at soft morning light are where the white marble glows without blowing out.
💡 Local tip: Arrive right at 8am. The light is softest, the crowds thinnest, and you’ll have the full three-hour window before the 11am close — it’s the only time non-Muslims can enter.
