The double-deck iron bridge over the Douro is Porto’s most photographed structure — and the source of its best skyline shot. Here’s how to work it.

Two decks, two shots
The upper deck (shared with Metro Line D) sits 60m above the Douro for a sweeping panorama of both banks and the Gaia port lodges. The lower deck puts you at water level, with the Ribeira houses towering overhead. Walk both — they’re completely different frames.
Which side, which time
For the classic skyline, cross to the Gaia side and shoot back toward Ribeira at sunset, when western light paints the stacked houses gold. From the Porto side in the morning, shoot toward Gaia. Stand mid-deck for the widest panorama; move to the ends for portraits, where the ironwork frames your subject and there’s less foot traffic.
💡 Local tip: Don’t leave at sunset — stay for blue hour, when the Ribeira lights come on and reflect in the Douro. The Serra do Pilar viewpoint, right by the Gaia end, is the perfect finishing position.
