El Matador State Beach
El Matador State Beach is one of the most romantic proposal spots in Los Angeles, known for its dramatic sea caves, rugged cliffs, and golden rock formations that glow beautifully at sunset. One of the best places to propose is inside the iconic arch-shaped cave or along the shoreline where the rocks frame the ocean for a naturally cinematic backdrop. Golden hour is ideal here, when the light softens and reflects off the cliffs for that warm, dreamy California look. Tip: the walk down involves a steep staircase and uneven terrain, so wear comfortable shoes and plan a little extra time to get there safely.

Venice Beach
Venice Beach offers a fun, vibrant twist on a Los Angeles proposal, blending ocean views with colorful murals, palm-lined paths, and that iconic California energy. A great spot to propose is near the quieter stretch by the Venice Canals or just off the main boardwalk, where you can still enjoy the beach backdrop without the bigger crowds. Sunset is ideal for photos, when the light turns soft and golden and the ocean reflects those dreamy California tones. Tip: weekends and holidays can get especially busy with pop-ups, performers, and extra foot traffic, so a weekday proposal usually feels much more relaxed.

Sunset is especially magical here, with soft golden light and pastel skies creating a calm, romantic setting. Tip: cloud cover is common in late spring and early summer, especially in the morning—sunset usually clears, but it’s worth checking the forecast.

How To Hire A Los Angeles Proposal Photographer
The moment you reach for the ring, adrenaline and emotions start to kick in and you might not even remember the moment! Hiring a secret Los Angeles proposal photographer for your surprise engagement will allow you to capture and relive that moment again and again.
Your marriage proposal is a story you will never tire of telling, so it definitely deserves better than selfies! Capture it with Los Angeles proposal photography that you'll look back on for years to come.
How does a proposal photoshoot work?
Before choosing a photographer, we recommend having some Los Angeles proposal ideas in mind first! There are two ways a proposal photoshoot usually happens:
- Hire the photographer for a “normal” photoshoot with your partner, but let the photographer in on your secret proposal plan! This is the best way to ensure the photographer captures the moment perfectly, usually at a closer distance and better positioned.
- The photographer can be waiting at the designated spot to secretly capture the moment, paparazzi-style. After the big moment, the photographer can introduce themselves and proceed to capture that post-engagement glow.
After your photo shoot is booked, you will be able to plan and coordinate with your photographer directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a proposal photographer cost in Los Angeles?
Local Lens proposal photo sessions in Los Angeles start at $365 and range up to $595+ USD, with three packages from 60 minutes to 2 hours. All of our photographers are handpicked for their quality, style, and skill, and there’s no extra fee for a marriage proposal—just a 1-hour minimum booking requirement. Keep in mind that some locations may also include additional travel fees or entrance fees.
Can I include flowers, champagne, or decorations in my proposal?
Yes! This depends on the photographer’s availability and ability to help coordinate those details, and any extras may come with an additional cost paid either to the photographer or a separate vendor. If you’re planning something special, we recommend asking in advance what’s possible and what the added cost would be.
Do I need a permit for a proposal photoshoot in Los Angeles?
In many Los Angeles parks and public spaces, casual photos are usually fine, but bringing a professional photographer may require a permit—especially in city or county parks. The rules can vary quite a bit depending on the exact location, so it’s always best to check in advance. Permits are often managed through FilmLA or the local park office.
Can I get all the RAW photos?
What should I know about Los Angeles weather for a proposal?
Los Angeles is sunny year-round, but coastal areas can still get unexpected cloud cover—especially during “June Gloom”—and temperatures often drop quickly near the ocean after sunset. Inland locations like Griffith Park tend to be warmer and clearer, so the weather can feel quite different depending on the exact proposal spot.
Are there any local rules tourists might not expect?
Yes—things like drones are often not allowed, and tripods or large equipment may require permits even if the proposal itself is simple. Also, many popular locations have limited parking and specific operating guidelines, so planning ahead helps avoid last-minute stress.
Can I buy a proposal shoot for someone else?
Yes! Purchasing a gift card is an easy way. You can also make the inquiry and book the photographer and then once you are ready to pass communication off, just change the contact preferences in your Local Lens account and then the photographer will switch over to communicating to the person you select.
How long does it take to get the photos?
Your photos are edited for light, color, and composition, then delivered in high-resolution JPEG format through a private online gallery within 5 business days. Your photographer will upload more images than the number included in your package, so you can choose your favorite photos to keep. From your gallery, you can also purchase additional digital images, prints, canvas prints, and more. We partner with Bay Photo, one of the best in the business for professional art-quality photography prints.
