North Avenue Beach
North Avenue Beach is one of the best places to propose in Chicago if you want that iconic skyline-meets-lake moment—where the city feels grand, but your moment still feels personal. The best spot to propose is along the curved shoreline facing south toward the skyline, where you get a clean, unobstructed view of Chicago’s buildings rising behind you. Early morning or golden hour works best for softer light and fewer crowds, especially in summer when the beach gets busy fast. Tip: North Avenue Beach can be breezy—choose outfits that move well for effortless, polished photos.

Olive Park is a hidden gem for a Chicago proposal, offering a peaceful lakefront setting with a straight-on view of the skyline that feels both intimate and cinematic. One of the best places to propose is at the end of the tree-lined pathway facing the city, where the skyline lines up perfectly behind you for a clean, iconic backdrop. Golden hour is especially beautiful here, with soft light reflecting off the lake and fewer people compared to nearby hotspots. Tip: The park has a long entrance walkway, so plan a natural reason to walk all the way to the end together—it helps the moment feel seamless and unforced. Opening hours: daily 6:00 AM–11:00 PM. Early morning works best for photos, when the light is soft and the crowds are lighter, allowing for a cleaner, more intimate feel. How To Hire A Chicago Proposal Photographer
The moment you reach for the ring, adrenaline and emotions start to kick in and you might not even remember the moment! Hiring a secret Chicago proposal photographer for your surprise engagement will allow you to capture and relive that moment again and again.
Your marriage proposal is a story you will never tire of telling, so it definitely deserves better than selfies! Capture it with Chicago proposal photography that you'll look back on for years to come.
How does a proposal photoshoot work?
Before choosing a photographer, we recommend having some Chicago proposal ideas in mind first! There are two ways a proposal photoshoot usually happens:
- Hire the photographer for a “normal” photoshoot with your partner, but let the photographer in on your secret proposal plan! This is the best way to ensure the photographer captures the moment perfectly, usually at a closer distance and better positioned.
- The photographer can be waiting at the designated spot to secretly capture the moment, paparazzi-style. After the big moment, the photographer can introduce themselves and proceed to capture that post-engagement glow.
After your photo shoot is booked, you will be able to plan and coordinate with your photographer directly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a proposal photographer cost in Chicago?
Local Lens proposal photo sessions in Chicago start at $275 and range up to $450+ USD, with three packages from 60 minutes to 2 hours. All of our photographers are handpicked for their quality, style, and skill, and there’s no extra fee for a marriage proposal—just a 1-hour minimum booking requirement. Keep in mind that some locations may also include additional travel fees or entrance fees.
Can I include flowers, champagne, or decorations in my proposal?
Yes! This depends on the photographer’s availability and ability to help coordinate those details, and any extras may come with an additional cost paid either to the photographer or a separate vendor. If you’re planning something special, we recommend asking in advance what’s possible and what the added cost would be.
What is the best time of year to propose in Chicago considering the weather?
Late spring (May–June) and early fall (September–October) are usually the best times to propose in Chicago, with milder temperatures and beautiful seasonal scenery. Summer feels lively and fun, while winter can be cozy and magical—but lakefront wind and cold weather can be a factor. Whenever you plan it, it’s smart to check the forecast and have a simple backup location in mind.
Can I get all the RAW photos?
Where can I propose in Chicago with skyline views but fewer crowds?
While Chicago has many popular spots, you can still find quieter places with beautiful skyline views if you know where to look. Locations like Olive Park, North Avenue Beach (a bit further from the main entrance), or less busy sections of Lincoln Park offer stunning backdrops without the heavy crowds of places like The Bean. Choosing a slightly tucked-away spot or exploring beyond the main viewpoints can make your proposal feel much more private while still capturing that iconic Chicago skyline.
Do I need a permit to propose in Chicago parks or popular locations?
In most Chicago parks and public spaces, simple proposals without large setups don’t require a permit. However, if you’re planning anything elaborate—like arches, chairs, or professional setups—you may need approval from the Chicago Park District, especially in busy areas like Millennium Park. Keeping things low-key or working with someone local can help ensure everything goes smoothly.
Can I buy a proposal shoot for someone else?
Yes! Purchasing a gift card is an easy way. You can also make the inquiry and book the photographer and then once you are ready to pass communication off, just change the contact preferences in your Local Lens account and then the photographer will switch over to communicating to the person you select.
How long does it take to get the photos?
Your photos are edited for light, color, and composition, then delivered in high-resolution JPEG format through a private online gallery within 5 business days. Your photographer will upload more images than the number included in your package, so you can choose your favorite photos to keep. From your gallery, you can also purchase additional digital images, prints, canvas prints, and more. We partner with Bay Photo, one of the best in the business for professional art-quality photography prints.
