The Ha’penny Bridge: A Dublin Photo Guide

The white cast-iron arc over the River Liffey is Dublin’s signature crossing — and one of its best-loved photo spots. Here’s how to shoot it well.

Two anglesFrom the quays (the curve) or on the bridge
Best conditionsA calm evening for river reflections

Where to stand

From the quays (either bank), you get the bridge’s elegant curve against the city and, on a calm evening, its reflection in the Liffey. From on the bridge, you get leading lines up and down the river. The lamp-lit arch is the classic frame; the boardwalk on the north quay gives a clean low angle.

Time it for blue hour

The bridge is good all day, but it comes alive at blue hour, when the lights switch on and mirror in the water against a deep sky. Aim for a still evening — wind chops up the reflection.

💡 Local tip: For the cleanest reflection shot, shoot in the window just after sunset when there’s still colour in the sky but the bridge lights are already on — you get both the glow and the mirror.

Make it a story

The bridge and river make a romantic, unmistakably-Dublin backdrop — a proposal favourite. See our proposal photography page.
