How to photograph Nyhavn in Copenhagen

Nyhavn’s row of colourful canal houses is the most photographed spot in Copenhagen. Here’s how to get the version worth keeping — reflection and all.

The essentials

WhereNyhavn canal, central Copenhagen
CostFree · public quayside
Best lightSunrise (empty) or blue hour (lit)
The reflectionNeeds calm water — no wind, no boats
Best angleEnd of the harbour, or opposite bank

Where to stand

For the classic shot, head to the end of the harbour and look back down the line of houses. For the reflection, shoot the colourful south bank from the opposite side of the canal — at sunrise the light bounces off the facades and, if the water’s still, mirrors them perfectly.

Time it right

Sunrise gives you an empty quay and soft light. Blue hour gives you the houses and boats lit against a deep sky. Midday is busy and flat by comparison.

💡 Local tip: The reflection is the hard part — Copenhagen is windy and the canal is busy with boats. If you arrive to glassy water, take the reflection frames immediately, before the next tour boat or gust ripples it.

Make it a story

The colourful canal is a joyful, unmistakably-Copenhagen backdrop — a proposal favourite. See our proposal photography page.
