From Monastiraki Square to Plaka, these are our favorites.
Obviously you have to get a few photos at the Acropolis. The most iconic site in Athens, it’s not one but several temples, and you have quite a few photo angles to choose from. Whether you want the ruins in the far background or you’d rather pose up close, get there as soon as it opens to avoid the crowds.
Plaka is highly considered a “cool” neighborhood in Athens and for good reason. It’s totally photogenic, with its ancient architecture mixed with graffiti, cute cafes and taverns. Plus, it’s right near the Acropolis, for an easy side stop during your sightseeing excursion around the city.
You’ll find Monastiraki Square on the north side of the Acropolis, where the ancient and the new meet in the middle. The hustle and bustle make the little area a good spot if you prefer urban photography, but would like to include some of Athens’ ancient feel into your photos as well.
Also near the Acropolis, this hill (rather than a mountain), is a great place for finding breathtaking panoramas for your backdrop. In addition, a lovely little chapel sits at the top of the hill, for even more unique photo opportunities.
Modern Olympic Stadium Complex
Not everything in Athens is about the old, though. If you prefer more modern shots, head to the current Olympic stadium, a short drive out of the city. The interesting architecture makes for a great backdrop with stunning visual effects.
