Best Time for a Phoenix Photoshoot

The desert sun rules the calendar here. Pick the right season and hour and Phoenix is glorious; pick wrong and it’s 110°F at noon.

Pick your season

November through March is prime: warm, clear days and comfortable evenings — the reason Phoenix fills with visitors all winter.

Spring can add desert wildflowers to the foreground on the preserve trails after a wet winter.

Summer is genuinely extreme — triple digits are routine. Shoot at sunrise or not at all. The upside: July–September monsoon season brings dramatic cloudscapes and lightning at dusk.

Golden hour is survival and strategy

Midday desert light is harsh and unflattering, and in summer it’s dangerous. The first hour after sunrise and the last before sunset give soft, warm light on the sandstone and saguaros — and bearable temperatures.

💡 Local tip: Sunrise for the mountains and trails (Camelback, Papago), sunset for the west-facing icons (Hole-in-the-Rock, Dobbins Lookout). Plan the route around which way each spot faces.

TimeWhat you get
SunriseCool air, empty trails, soft east light
