1. Sirmione & Scaligero Castle
Best light: early morning ·
Terrain: flat, pedestrian peninsula. The lake’s most iconic stop — a moated 13th-century castle guarding a narrow peninsula. It’s also the busiest; early morning or an overnight stay is the only way to see it without the crowds.
2. Malcesine & Monte Baldo
Best light: golden hour, from the summit ·
Terrain: cable car (rotating gondola). A medieval castle-town on the eastern shore, paired with a rotating cable car to Monte Baldo — one of northern Italy’s finest panoramas, taking in the whole lake and the Alps beyond.
3. Riva del Garda
Best light: sunset ·
Terrain: flat lakefront, hillside Bastione. The best base for the lake’s northern end — windsurfers at nearby Torbole, the Bastione viewpoint, and the Varone Waterfall.
4. Limone sul Garda
Best light: golden hour ·
Terrain: steep, cliffside. One of the prettiest towns on the western shore — colorful buildings tumbling down cliffs to the water, with a dramatic cliffside cycle path.
5. Bardolino
Best light: late afternoon ·
Terrain: flat, walkable. A wine town on the eastern shore — vineyards, an olive oil museum, and a relaxed lakeside promenade.
6. Torri del Benaco
Best light: sunset ·
Terrain: small harbor. A quieter gem most visitors skip — lakeside terraces right over the water, without Sirmione’s crowds.
💡 Local tip: Sirmione and Malcesine draw the heaviest crowds, especially July–August. If your schedule allows, base yourself in Riva del Garda in the north for a calmer feel, and time Sirmione for early morning.
